History

The Natural History Museum «Vera Alleman Haeghebaert» of the Ricardo Palma University, was born in the Faculty of Biological Sciences; like the majority of natural history museums, or similar ones, it had its origins from scientific collections used as didactic material for the teaching of natural sciences. These collections had to be conserved and be a support for subsequent research, so it was necessary to have an institution that fulfilled that function. That is why Dr. Vera Alleman Haeghebaert, professor at the Faculty of Biological Sciences, proposed to the Faculty Council, when Dr. Tomas Agurto Saenz was dean, the creation of the Natural History Museum. In this way, on November 26, 1991, by Agreement of the University Council through Rectoral Resolution No. 910993, the Museum of Natural History «Vera Alleman Haeghebaert» was created. The first collections were those of Paleontology of invertebrates and samples of malacology, donated by national and international researchers, increasing over the years by different institutions and researchers.

As of 2010, the museum occupies the first level of the administrative building that includes a permanent exhibition area and another for collections and research, receiving visitors from educational institutions, among others. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we stopped the activities that allowed us to remodel, and on March 25, 2022, the doors were reopened, where we currently receive visits from families, students of all levels and interested people.
